The Story of
Act III Productions
From our Founder, Jo-Anne MacDonald

For 11 years, my career has taken me away from the East Coast. As fate would have it, Covid 19 had me returning to Saint John only days before the worldwide lockdown. It was an unceremonious way of landing back home in March of 2020. When NB had their first Covid bubble open in July, I was quick to invite some of my old friends over for a small reunion - people I had known for decades from my theatre days. There were around ten of us gathered in my living room to reminisce and get caught up on each other’s lives. Nothing could have prepared me for the magical evening that followed.

Before long, someone was behind the piano, then someone broke into song, then someone else started singing. Then another person got up to sing, and another, and another….and so on. Then duets, then chorus singing with 4-part harmony. It was astonishing! I was overwhelmed by the stratospheric talent that was performing in my living room, and not one of them under 50.

When everyone had left and the house was quiet, my mind went into overdrive and the creative juices started to flow. Although I had continued to paint and write during my corporate career, I had put theatre on the back burner and now I was inspired! I knew I had to create a company that would ensure these people, in their third act of life, had every opportunity to showcase their talents – like I had just witnessed in my living room, to a wider audience. I wanted as many people as possible to experience what I had just experienced.

The following week I approached three people I had known for many years, they themselves talented beyond measure, to see if they would be interested in helping me create a production company that would not be exclusive to performers 50+, but that would ensure there were great parts for this age group, in productions. I asked Dan MacKay, Rosy Maloney and Theresa Patterson to join me on this endeavour and all quickly said “yes!”. This was the genesis of ACT III PRODUCTIONS.

We officially began our journey in Sept 2020. Since then, we have written and produced two original plays, produced an original comedy by local playwright Sandra Bell, and created and performed in a concert-style tribute to the amazing Stan Rogers.

We plan to continue to grow and expand our company and contribute to the theatrical community by featuring incredibly talented people in their third act of life who bring a wealth of skill and experience behind the scenes as well as on stage. There are no bounds, and the sky is the limit!
